Molly O’Halloran is a self-taught artist who began making art in 2025, at the age of 42.
Working urgently and intuitively with oil pastel, oil stick, colored pencil, and graphite, she embraces accident, surprise, imperfection, and an uninhibited use of color.
Her work inhabits the space between the tender and the grotesque, where humor and sorrow are often indistinguishable. She has long been drawn to outsider art, folk art, and children's art, particularly their disregard for convention and their uneasy relationship with beauty.
The sudden death of her mother in 2011 remains an undercurrent in her work, informing its emotional intensity and rawness. Her images give form to contradictory feelings of abandonment, anger, hatred, tenderness, love, and desire.
O’Halloran lives and works in Charlottesville, Virginia, with her three sons: one human and two feline.
